Four Greek Myths
Susan Nigro, the great American virtuoso of the contrabassoon, and Mark Lindeblad, her pianist-partner in musical adventures around and about the lower ledger lines of the bass clef, played my Four Greek Myths for contrabassoon and piano on a concert at Northwestern University in October. Wow, that's cool. The contrabassoon sounds like some huge imposing animal.
In the first piece the contrabassoon represents the character of Hades, the god of the underworld, and the upper voices of the piano represent Persephone, a young girl he fancies who lives on the earth. This is the kind of programmatic writing that works really well for contrabassoon. When it comes to being huge and imposing, nothing else does what the contrabassoon can do.
